Neretva flows from the wellhead to the delta originally from the south-east to the northwest, forming the northern border of Herzegovina. Not far from the Konjic and the Rama, it turns south and flows in the direction of the north to the south.
Its tributaries in the upper reaches are Repešnica, Rakitnica and Ljuta on the right, and Lađanica, Župski Krupac, Bukovica and Bijela on the left, as well as Krupac, Trešanica, Idbarčica (Baščica), Kraljuščica and Neretvica. Below are Bregava and Trebižat.
In the upper stream, up to Čapljina, the Neretva is a canyon river, and west of Konjic it flows into the reservoir of Jablanica. In addition to Gabela, it spreads in the delta area of 196 km2 (which has been under UNESCO protection since 1992), and from Opuzen it is divided into twelve sleeves (3 of which are flowing). River Neretva is water-borne from the sea coast to Metković (20 km) and it flows to the Adriatic Sea nearby Rogotin and Ploče.
